Case Studies

Hornsea One

25 September, installation vessel Bold Tern installed the last of 91 turbines on Hornsea One offshore wind farm. The complete wind farm consists of a total of 174 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 turbines and is the world’s largest offshore wind farm to date. Hornsea One is located 120km from shore which is the furhest from shore an offshore wind farm has ever been built.

  • Bold Tern installed four turbines per cycle
  • The world’s largest wind farm will be capable of powering well over one million UK homes
  • Installation began 4 February and Bold Tern’s final turbine (no. 91 out of a total of 174) was installed 25 September

Hohe See and Albatros

20 September, Brave Tern installed the last turbine on Albatros offshore wind farm – an extension to Hohe See. Installation at Hohe See was completed 12 August. Blue Tern worked in tandem with Brave Tern installing turbines on both Hohe See (71 turbines) and Albatros (16 turbines). The wind farms are located in the German part of the North Sea and will provide up to 710,000 households with clean energy.

  • Brave Tern and Blue Tern worked in tandem, each installing four turbines per cycle
  • This is the largest offshore wind farm project under construction in Germany
  • Installation of the 87 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 turbines began on Hohe See 5 April

Horns Rev 3

In January 2019, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier finished transporting and installing 49 V164-8.3MW turbines on Horns Rev 3, 25-40 km off the Danish Jutland coast. The offshore wind park will supply enough energy for 425.000 Danish households with a capacity of 406,7MW.

  • Brave Tern installed four turbines per cycle
  • World’s most powerful wind turbines installed
  • Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm

Borkum Riffgrund 2

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier just finished installing 56 V164-8.0MW turbines on Borkum Riffgrund 2 in the German North Sea on 31 August 2018. The project was completed ahead of schedule. The offshore wind park will supply enough energy for 460.000 German households with a total power output of 450MW.

  • 8MW is the largest turbine installed in the German North Sea
  • Bold Tern installed four turbines per cycle
  • Project completed ahead of schedule

The scope of work for Fred. Olsen Windcarrier was the transportation and installation of 56 V164-8.0MW turbines – 36 of them to be installed on monopile foundations and 20 on 50m high jackets with 10m high suction buckets.
