Final turbines installed ahead of schedule on Borkum Riffgrund 2

On 31 August 2018, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up installation vessel Bold Tern successfully installed the final turbine, completing the installation of MHI Vestas turbines at the Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm ahead of schedule.

"I am very proud of our experienced team for their hard work on this project. Installations have been fast and the whole project was completed ahead of schedule."

The 56 V164-8.0MW turbines will have a total output of 450MW.

“It has been a pleasure to work with the crew from Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. Bold Tern has performed very well installing the 8 MW turbines. The combination of a competent and proactive crew and an experienced installation team from MHI Vestas has led to fast installation times throughout the project. We are very satisfied with the whole team which is reflected in the project finishing ahead of schedule.” James Gibbs, Offshore Installation Manager, Ørsted said.

“I am very proud of our experienced team for their hard work on this project,” Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s project manager Eskil Røset said. “We have worked closely with our client Ørsted and with the installation contractor MHI Vestas to safely and efficiently complete installation. Installations have been fast and the whole project was completed ahead of schedule.”

“With the last V164-8.0 MW turbine now installed at Borkum Riffgrund 2, we look forward to the commissioning phase and to the future of offshore wind energy in Germany,” said MHI Vestas Chief Operations Officer, Flemming Ougaard. “In partnership with Ørsted, we are proud to contribute to the clean energy transition, with 56 MHI Vestas turbines powering more than 460,000 German households.”

Fred. Olsen related company Global Wind Service is involved in both installation, mechanical and electrical completion, and pre-assembly. “GWS and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier has a really good and close collaboration with years of offshore installation experience. Something that our customers and the project is definitely benefitting from,” said Global Wind Service’s CCO Michael Høj Olsen.

The Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm is located 57 km off the northwest coast of Germany and will provide up to 460,000 households with clean energy.

On 3 May 2018, Bold Tern set sail equipped with the first load of turbines, and 28 June marked the halfway milestone.
