Final Turbine Installation On Moray East

Final turbine installed ahead of schedule on Moray East

On 14 September 2021, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up vessel Blue Tern successfully installed the final turbine, completing the installation of Vestas turbines at Moray East offshore wind farm. The 100 V164-9.5MW turbines will have a total output of 950MW and is to date the biggest offshore wind project in Scottish history

“Once again, it has been a pleasure to work with the crew from Fred. Olsen Windcarrier to install the Moray East project’s 100 V164-9.5MW turbines. The world-class vessels, Bold Tern and Blue Tern, as well as the experienced crew and installation teams have enabled the project to be installed swiftly throughout the project. The delivery of the final turbine at Moray East project is a key milestone for the whole team, particularly amidst the challenges of the past year,” said Allan Birk Wisby, Project Director, Vestas

Enrique Alvarez, Project Director Moray East said: “In the face of unprecedented global conditions we have safely completed the installation of 100 turbines within the challenging timescale of a single season, and I would like to thank and congratulate all those involved in achieving this milestone safely. Offshore wind technology is developing rapidly, and a collaborative approach throughout the supply chain enabled us to work with vessels and crew at the leading edge of the sector, contributing to our early success."

“It has been a pleasure to be part of this monumental project, and I am so proud seeing the seamless cooperation with our client, Vestas,” said Simen Tefre, Project Manager, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. “This effort includes the people on board both Bold Tern and Blue Tern, as well as those on shore throughout the project. The joint experience, good communication and positive attitude have been key to completing the project well ahead of schedule and with zero LTI’s or medical cases. A big thank you to the whole Fred. Olsen Windcarrier team – both onshore and offshore – to our client Vestas, and to all our other partners involved in making this project such a success.”

Bold Tern installed the first turbines on Moray East back in January but was later replaced by Blue Tern to undergo a scheduled crane upgrade. A carefully planned vessel substitution was successfully carried out in May. Blue Tern was delivered fully loaded on the Moray East site, and the overlap helped to improve the project schedule. The vessel substitution is a good example of how Fred. Olsen Windcarrier helps clients by thinking new.
