Case Study: Galloper

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier joined the Galloper installation project midway to support timely completion for client Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE). The scope of work included delivering a fully mobilised vessel, with marine crew for transport and installation.

The installation scope was shared with Swire Blue Ocean’s Pacific Orca, who started installation in May 2017. Bold Tern joined the project in September.

The contract was agreed quickly, and Bold Tern went on hire on 11th September, within only 6 to 8 weeks after initial contact. Fred. Olsen Windcarrier was able to significantly reduce the time and costs for mobilisation by reengineering the existing tower grillage used for the recent Veja Mate project, and reusing nacelle sea fastenings and blade grillage.

After the initial load out in Esbjerg, Bold Tern was working from Hull in East Yorkshire.

Bold Tern’s flexible deck layout allowed her to carry four complete turbines per trip, and our jetting systems allowed us to complete jacking operations in just seven hours.

The site is characterised by London Clay, which is known to be a significant challenge for jack-up vessels during leg retrieval.

However, due to the vessels efficient jetting system Bold Tern was able to successfully jack down and retrieve legs from all positions without delays. The tubular legs also helped avoid clay accumulation on the leg structures.

“Soil conditions were particularly challenging on this site, and were handled with excellence by our experienced vessel crew. Our jacking equipment proved up to the challenge and efficiently tackled these conditions,” Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s project manager Sten Rundstrøm said.

“As we entered into the project as an acceleration vessel on short notice, planning activities and mobilisation ran in parallel. Great cooperation and communications were essential between us and SGRE to ensure ontime delivery of the vessel.”

Galloper Offshore Wind Farm is located approx. 30KM off the coast of Suffolk and has water depths of between 27-36m. The site consists of 56 SGRE 6.0MW turbines.

Bold Tern installed 17 of the turbines, installing the final turbine on 22nd December 2017.
