Construction

Working closely with fellow Fred. Olsen related companies, we offer clients all the key elements in the installation scope, including project management, engineering, jack-ups, crew transfer vessels and skilled installation personnel.

Installation

We believe Fred. Olsen Windcarrier is the most cost effective offshore wind installation company on the market, offering the best price/quality ratio via a holistic, integrated solution.

We have installed more than 300 offshore wind turbines of up to 6 MW, and 50% of all offshore turbines installed in Germany.

Our success in the field is supported by a high level of customer satisfaction and high quality human resources and project management expertise. We offer the most flexible, proactive and solution-oriented approach in the market, with highly skilled and experienced offshore installation personnel and tailor-made engineering, logistics and project management expertise.

Our offshore personnel, project managers and engineers work closely together to provide a fully integrated, team-centred service that typically includes:

  • Offshore construction managers
  • Appointed persons
  • Lift supervisors
  • Bolting technicians
  • Mechanical and electrical hook up technicians
  • Riggers
  • Welders

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s smooth-running turbine installation procedures centre on lifting operations planned and engineered in compliance with the most stringent industry standards, including BS7121 and LOLER.

We follow best practice in all areas, with risk management an integrated part of all our installation procedures and continuous training of personnel at the heart of our offer.

Cutting edge technology also plays a leading role in installation. Fred. Olsen Windcarrier owns and operates two first-class transport and installation jack-up vessels, Bold Tern and Brave Tern, designed for efficient and safe operations with a DP2 positioning system, high transit speed of up to 12 knots, a 3,200m2 deck space, 5,300 tonne payload and state-of-the-art 800 tonne main crane.

They are supported by a fleet of purpose-built service vessels providing safe and efficient transfer of crews and equipment.

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier has installed turbines in every possible configuration, including full rotor lifts, ‘bunny ear’ configuration nacelle lifts and separate nacelle lifts with single blade installation. We also install all types of offshore wind foundations, including monopiles, jackets, tripods and bucket foundations.

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s experience includes the installation of two meteorological masts at the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm (UK) using the innovative Mono Bucket foundations designed by Universal Foundation – a Fred. Olsen related company.

Project Management

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier has a highly competent and experienced project management team – with each project assigned to a dedicated project manager.

As a key link between our client and the wider Fred. Olsen Windcarrier team, the project manager mobilises and oversees the required skills and resources to meet the needs of the project and the client.

  • A dedicated project manager assigned for the duration of the project
  • Ensuring the project is delivered to the highest standards, on time and on budget
  • Change management
  • Risk management
  • Project reporting

The Fred. Olsen Windcarrier project management team have vast experience having worked for many years within technical and operational roles in the offshore and wind sectors.

Our project managers are solution orientated and will always go the extra mile to ensure projects are completed to the highest standards, on time and on budget. The team is always ready to react to new or unexpected tasks.

The project manager will ensure that projects are executed to client’s expectations, within a safe and efficient manner, and in line with the terms of the contract – working closely with the commercial team.

Our project managers are personally engaged in maintaining safe operations, working closely with our expert HSE department to ensure that all aspects of project follow the strictest HSEQ standards at all times – there is no compromise. We always align policies and standards with those of our clients.

The team is also deeply involved in the technical solutions, working closely with the engineering and operations departments.

The project management team are fundamental to the successful delivery of all our projects, and are in large part responsible for the excellent reputation that the company has gained for high quality projects, delivered on time.

Engineering

Our highly qualified engineering team perform critical planning of the methods and procedures that lead to every successful wind turbine installation we undertake, and its expertise and experience ensure that the company remains among the industry’s preferred suppliers.

Deploying state-of-the-art computer software and an in-depth knowledge of A-Z engineering disciplines, the team’s expertise covers:

  • Structural design, fabrication and installation
  • Geotechnical and jack-up operations
  • Heavy lifting operations
  • Load planning and deck layout optimisation
  • Marine analysis including transit planning, stability and vessel motion analysis
  • Weather downtime predictions
  • Advanced computer assisted drawing (CAD) and simulations

Acute attention to detail is at the heart of the team’s preparation, ensuring that operations flow flawlessly about Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s busy jack-up vessels.

A-Z engineering means that all individuals are involved from the tender phase and project planning to installation of the foundations and turbines. The valuable hands-on experience gained from each installation campaign is taken forward for the benefit of the next project.

The engineering team continually takes on and meets new challenges. From working with huge wind turbine components such as those on the record-breaking Alstom Haliade™ turbine to fast mobilisation and flexible responses often required for operations and maintenance (O&M) work. These typically involve short lead times in which the client needs to exchange or repair key components quickly to ensure minimum technical downtime to the wind farm.

The team is constantly striving to minimise risk and the time-per-installed-unit in assembly line campaigns such as the Riffgat or Butendiek projects. Methods and layouts are optimised for each project, taking into account the client’s objectives, maximising efficiency of operations and safeguarding personnel and assets throughout the life of a campaign. Through ISO 9001 and other certified standards and methodology the integrated engineering experience ensures that approval is achieved by class, marine warranty surveyor and other certification agencies without delay.
